every year in spring, there’s a day dedicated to the piano. concerts all over the world are organised by fans and players of this instrument. together with Leiter Verlag, Piano Day releases a compilation to celebrate that day. this fifth edition is around the topic Places. i’m honoured to have been invited to compose a piece for it.

the topic spoke to me, especially as the piano, because its weight usually keeps it in one place, always makes me daydream about other rooms and places while playing it. on a clear day, if i lean slightly to the side, i can play towards a tiny piece of blue visible from my window.

with «Kites», i tried to describe the utopian version of my favorite place of all: the sky is the same for everyone, it belongs to all of us and to none of us, to the birds, clouds, dreams, and the kites that children play with. and despite the reality being so different, the sky and the space beyond will always be the place that reminds us to keep imagining a different world.
